Moon goddess above me.

Hear my plea.

Protect those around me.

Keep this evil out.

Cora knelt in the area she’d cleared out. A small candle was lit, sitting on the dirt next to her. She opened the vial with the few strands of Derwin’s hair. She took one out and put the vial back in her bag.

This spell she was performing was to protect the townspeople and keep Derwin from them.

She placed the strand in the hot flame. It burned bright before turning to nothing.

No foot of his may cross my barrier.

I surround Howling Valley.

She envisioned the wards. Standing with her hands stretched out in front of her, she constructed an invisible dome to surround their area. The air was filled with the sounds of her constructing protection wards. Once it was complete, Cora opened her eyes.

No one would notice the ward. The citizens of Howling Valley could pass through it freely.

The coven Evan had spoken of may notice it. She hoped not. She would soon have to meet with them and bring them up to date on what was going on.

She risked Derwin picking up on her spell, but it was worth it. Something had to be done. She infused the construction of the wards with a spell. If any other witch noticed it, they would assume that it was a standard ward.

Not one crafted by someone on her level.

Cora could construct them on her own without spells.

Derwin was close. She could feel it. She hadn’t shared with the alpha and beta that he was closing in.

Cora closed her eyes and inhaled. Using a piece of him in a spell allowed her to briefly pick up on his proximity to her. He was in California.

Thankfully the state was massive, and it would take him a while to find her.

She hoped.

If he had help, there was no telling how long until he found her.

She prayed this ward would hide this small town from Derwin. If she were successful, he’d overlook it and continue his search for her elsewhere.

But deep down, she knew that wouldn’t be.

He was going to find her.

Cora bent down and blew out the candle. She tossed her belongings back into her bag. She grimaced, knowing there would be candle wax on the bottom of her bag. She’d have to get it out later.

She hefted her bag onto her shoulders and walked back toward her apartment. The moon’s rays floating down felt good. Witches drew their powers from the moon.

Cora loved the outdoors and loved spending time sitting outside at night absorbing energy from the moon. It was almost better than sunbathing as the humans did.

The snapping of a twig sounded off in the distance.

Cora paused, scanning the area.

Something was out there. The woods were dark, hard to see, but the moon was guiding her. She wished she had a nose as sensitive as Addy’s. Her soul mate could sniff out any scent.

Cora stiffened. She didn’t sense a threat but remained still. Something was walking toward her. Soft padding could be heard.
